John Vidal (F 62-67).

John died of cancer in October 2023 aged 74. Born in Accra, Ghana, after leaving St Bees School he studied English and economics at Birmingham University before moving to France where for a time he taught English as well as working as a journalist for various French newspapers. On his return to England, he continued this career with the Guardian in 1983, initially writing on the arts. He remained with the paper until 2016, becoming their authority on environmental matters, and eventually became the paper’s environmental editor. The plight of the third world, whose causes he championed over many years, became very dear to him.

He was twice married.
